A Slice of Heaven – The Sweet Rewards of RVing
June/July 2008 Issue No. 62
"I might have seen more of America when I was a child if I hadn't had to spend so much of my time protecting my half of the back seat from incursions by my sister," writes Calvin Trillin in Travels with Alice. The joy of RV travel is that there is space for everyone and more windows to view the roadside beauty, and RVers are adept at taking the road less traveled and discovering what lies around the next bend in the road ... A Mouth-Wateringly Memorable Trip to Crater Lake
Sometimes an RV excursion is a bit like a slice of pie. You're usually confronted with myriad choices. You can't stop thinking about it before it arrives. You try to savor it. And you tend to want to come back for more. At Beckie's Café in tiny Union Creek, Oregon, we were recently able to enjoy some famous huckleberry pie. But that was just part of our delectable drive. The appetizer (a wondrous waterfall) and second dessert (a spectacular lake) were, well, jaw-dropping.

National Scenic Byways
Far too often we see the roads we traverse purely as a means to get from point A to point B. Most spend far more hours in their cars commuting and running errands than truly enjoying what lies beyond the edge of the asphalt or concrete. But once you hit the road in your RV, why not get off the roads most traveled to take in the breath-taking splendor of our nation's system of scenic byways? There are approximately 600 roadways named "Byways" under various jurisdictions of the federal government, but only 126 of those have earned the distinctive honor of "America's Byways" as designated by the Department of Transportation. To be an American Byway, roads must have outstanding archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities - in other words, a little something for everyone. So pack up the RV, grab a map or GPS and read on for tips about some of the best-of-the-best Byways.
